All Right, You Vultures.

Days ago, I promised you all I'd mummfiy my recently deceased rat, Beavis, to the best of my ability. I also promised you that I'd take pictures while I did it. Ever since then, you've clamored for the photos. POSITIVELY CLAMORED.

Clamor no longer, cuz we're in business. The photographs are up. And they're here. Go nuts.

Remember, THESE ARE PICTURES OF RAT GUTS. THEY'RE DOUBLE LIFE-SIZED AND FULL COLOR. I'M NOT KIDDING. You know yourselves better than I do, so I'm going to expect you to use your own judgement as to whether or not you're ready to watch me carve up a dead rat like a rack of lamb.

Since Beavis has got more than a few weeks to go before he's ready, this is the last of the gore until June. Make it last, cuz from here on out, it's all about lapis lazuli, ushabtis, and other criminally boring crap you've got no real interest in.

Matt, my husband, deserves a lot of credit for helping me out on this one. He even let me chuck a rock at him after he made the initial cut, in accordance with tradition. He caught it, though. Which kind of buggered the ambiance.

But I dig him anyway. <3

That was absolutely fascinating. Thank you very much for sharing.

I read it after a large dinner. No problem. Fascinating stuff! I'm looking forward to seeing the final mummy, canopic jars and army of terracotta rats to serve him.

Wat kind of sicko are you exactly? How could you cut up your pet rat???? Do you think your rat would appreciate you cutting it up? No. No it would not.

Your kind of sicko, obviously.

And Beavis didn't really have an opinion on the matter. See, he's dead.

First troll, everyone! Let's give him a hand, he's been a real trooper!

*applauds both spike and the troll*

Very interesting job, Spike, and the guts were hardly as nasty as I expected.

Beavis is now one step closer to the gods. Fare thee well, rat traveler.

That's really, really cool. Happy travels, little rat.

I've often thought about what I'm going to do with my cat after he dies (I live up towards Lincoln Park), and was sort of half-considering building him a little raft and sailing him into the lake -- until I actually went out in a boat one day and noticed how awfully murky and funky it was. Hrm.

This is a very fascinating, respectful way to take care of your dead rat, I wish I had the time and iron stomach to mummify my darling ratties when they go! I've got a pinch of my favorite dog's cremated ashes in a little silver box around my neck, so I understand your need for ritual to care for the dead! Can't wait to see him all decked out and ready for the Egyptian Underworld... I bet there's lots of cute girlrats there for him to frolic with!

I have to say, when I first heard about you planning to mummify your pet rats I was a freaked out. But then I was thinking about my mother keeping our dogs ashes in her bedroom and that it's more of a tribute to Beavis then a reason to cut up your pet. Good luck with the rest of the process

Thank you both for sharing the process with us. The oddest thing for me was that he looked much less disgusting than all the formaldahyde-soaked critters I had to take apart in high school. But then again, I wasn't getting all the wonderful tactile sensations you were...

This would be a very nice lesson for school-children learning about ancient Egypt... yes... yes it would...

Bill Mudron's and Paul Riddell's.

Just for fun, I Googled "mummified rat". There were some actual mummy rats found (meaning someone did them on purpose). Most of them are finds of dried rats in houses.
One was up for auction, and there's a site of a guy who collects rat bits.

I salute you for a very moving tribute to a dead friend. I hope that everything works out well with the rest of the mummification, and I am looking forward to reading more of your progress.

However, if you wish technique tips for the post mortem evisceration of your next rodent, let me know. (I'm a biology tech kiddos, I've done this for a living before...)

Not much. Still mulling over the compliment you made about my line art. I'd always attributed that look to incompetence on my part so having it called "spontaneous" is something I oughtta write down and memorize.

I think it's a wonderful memorial to Beavis' memory- he's certainly becoming well known on the 'net, and the survival of a name is equally important as the survival of the body. You're giving me cause to reconsider the funerary arrangements for my own pet, though I wonder if I'd be able to go through with it all myself. I guess that's why embalmers are so important- you guys have really shown your strength of heart in doing it all yourselves.

I'm surprised you're going to go through with the amulets and everything, though- I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how you manage this.

Perhaps mummification is not unattainable for pets, after all. And that reminds me- an Anpw kid once offered to mummify my kitty for me. I think I'll send him over this way, and perhaps he can pick up a few tricks.

Best of luck to you, and AUS to the soon-to-be Wsyr Beavis! A heart so small will have no trouble at all on the scales of Ma'at.

Although I appreciate that you may have wanted to make it more authentic, I was surprised by the lack of gloves. I can't imagine the intestines felt very good sliding around in your giant, giant fists.

Woah... That was disturbingly fascinating. A nice little tribute to a good friend by sending him into enternity. ^^) Fascinated by death and Egypt myself, it's pretty cool that you guys went ahead and let everyone see the process.

I remember that my middle-school had made mummy chickens, of all creatures, and I suppose are somewhere at the building. I dunno...

Hope the process is a success! Can't wait to see what he looks like as a 'mummy.'

A friend linked to this one.

Amazing.

God grant that it's many, many years away, but someday my wife and I will have to figure out what to do with the mortal remains of our cat -- she's only 15, so I hope that we won't have to make such a decision for at least five years.

Still. . . mummification was traditional for cats. . .

Creepy, yes. But what part of preparing the dead isn't? Everyone gets cut apart and emptied out at one point or another, be it mummification or whatever it is the morgue/mortician do to you before you're buried. If you're going to be grossed out by this and call the owners "sickos", it really makes you wonder what you're even doing here? Have a little culture and a sense of history.

But I'm harping on a troll that posted ages ago. I'm shocked (in a good way) to see that there was only one. Kudos on open-minded surfers!

So anyway, I just wanted to say (clearly) that the project was an awesome tribute and a great way to actively recreate a piece of history - however creepy or gross it may have been.

And to Beavis I: Give a nod to my rat Cayman, will ya? He's been offed for ages and had a great interest in pissing on things, as well. You two should totally party.

A few things that could have helped out...

1.) Go to your local college campus and they usually have a few different pairs of scissors used for disection. They're not expensice and they would have made the process much easier

2.) Buy a pair of latex gloves for your hands. Again cheap, helps with the mess and the gross factor

3.) Before disemboweling the rat at all, there's a technique biologists use when extracting organs

http://www.webcomicsnation.com/~spike/mummification/heart.jpg

In the above picture, notice the ridge along the center of the spinal chord. Had it not been covered in blood, the surrounding tissue would be pink-ish and the raised area would be dark red. Yes, a major blood vessel. Before removing anything you pull the organs outside the body to a side until you can see this. Then you cut it and place gauze over it to collect the blood. In this way, you drain a lot of the blood and make it a hell of a lot cleaner to do your business

Wow my rat just died between last night 12/15-12/16/06 ...12:am-12:pm she in still in my room I'm undecided of what to do with here corpse I want to mummify her but I don’t know how so I can’t bravely do it my self. So, I mean I don’t even know if there are people that can do it for me and I’ll pay them like a business or some kind of organization. There should be something out there if they’re “stuffing “animals for hunting trophies or decorative purposes (you know what I mean). Any who, if you have info of any kind please let me know I would appreciate even if it’s all ready too late I don’t mind. Well I don’t know what I’ll do now maybe keep searching, or burying her at the park (I don’t think that’s allowed-some kid might dig her up) I’m thinking of something with salt dehydrating the corpse I don’t know…even to do that I have to research, well wish me luck.
