Atrocity Tourism: "apachearrow" Vs. Nintendo.

Been a while since we went gawping, hasn't it? Let's fix that.

You might already know about Snopes.com, urban legend debunking site of choice for intarweb skeptics and killjoys everywhere. But maybe you didn't know about their forums, such as the "We've Got Mail!" messageboard, dedicated to some of the more unusual emails that show up in the site's mailbox.

The site recently began getting emails from an anonymous man claiming to be the true creator of Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, The Mushroom Kingdom, Kirby, and pretty much every other major Nintendo icon of the past twenty years. It turns out that Mario is based on a friend of his from the Navy who died of brain cancer, but then some art students stole all the drawings and sold them to the Japanese, who changed Mario's name to "Jumpman" for the original Donkey Kong game, but then changed it back to Mario and added Luigi and the rest of it in follow-up games just to mock him in his powerlessness. Oh, and they've been slowly strip-mining his 30-year-old sketchbook for concept art for the past three decades, bilking him out of millions.

I think. Or something. I dunno, he's not a big fan of punctuation.

It goes on for thirteen glorious pages, and it starts right here. The artist in question is posting as "apachearrow," and he really starts losing his shit around page four.

Also, he blames the Navy for causing him "mental problems."

Shocking.

I read every single page of that thread as well as did some additional research into the Cobre High School alumni records. There is mention of Arden Lawrence in the graduating class of 1974, but his dead friend Mario doesn't seem to exist at all.

Not exactly a surpise, huh?

What amazes me is that this isn't the first time I've read about some Anonymous Internet Crank claiming he's had his cartoon character ripped off by Evil MegaCorp. I've heard this exact same claim made with Lola Bunny from "Space Jam," Sonic the Hedgehog, and the Simpsons.

While I can believe this guy drew art that featured mushrooms in the 70s, and I can even buy he mighta had a character named Mario... yeah. This positively reeks of someone forgetting their meds.

Yeah, I'm sure he created an overall and mustach character in the 70's but I don't think that its evidence to prove that "art students" stole his sketches and sold it to those shifty Japanese.

I also got a good laugh from reading his federal records where they where trying to determine if he was mentally unfit enough to recieve worker's comp.

You did'nt dig deep enough and your one sided, in favor of Nintendo. I wonder why? Also Mario Garcia lived in Bayard New Mexico and graduated from Cobre High School in 1973 or so, Not in 1974 when I did. I said not once nothing about the Navy.I was in the Air Force, Mario never joined the military. You are incorrect could be on that account, all of your ideas are invalid. I am the real creator of the Mario artworks. Arden Lawrence

Wow.

Hi, Arden!

I'm willing to give you a chance. Do you have a sample of your artworks from the 1970s to prove your claim? Email it to me by clicking my name on this post, I'd love to take a look at it.

Wow. Hi Spike! Thanks for you interest and reply. I'm honored with your offer of a chance...only it's not necessary. I'm an artist like you living in this time. As the artist who created Mario and crew I only feel comforatble to say that my friendship with the real Mario is still in my heart and always will be. I'll send you this Mushroom kingdom picture that i drew that you may have seen. It's all I can offer you at this time. If you want, you may compare it with Super Mario Bros. 3 on Nintendo. I realize though, that it's not a perfect match but it is very similar to the environment and backgrounds of the game itself. I never accused former friends or art students I knew of for stealing my art. I think they could have as far as anybody else could have. As you see, somebody had to..they were used without my permission. I don't know what happened to my art. I refuse to have a "yes I did, no you didn't" argument. I think I started to become caught up in a thread that was a twisted hateful creature without feelings. I do want to say I would rather be polite and kind. I want to answer your questions. I think all artists deserve to be treated with respect. I am who you think I am. I can't change your thoughts. So it's ok if you don't believe me. I am the artist who created Mario and crew. Arden Lawrence

here is the URL for the picture i drew and scanned of the Mushroom Kingdom that i did around 1977 with Brown India Ink.

That is very very interesting.

I'll post a link to this image on the frontpage of my site, so everyone else can judge the veracity your claim. Barely anyone reads older entires, so this way, other people can see the picture for themselves.

Thanks again! I've learned a lot today!

Hi Spike, because of unforseen circumstances I have had to change my name from Apachearrow to the name fadingarrow. I would just like to say all in all everything is going fine and I hope the same for you and all your fans. Arden Lawrence
