I Hate Anime.

Wait, no I don't. It's just pretty hard to remember that, sometimes. Good thing I have Katsushiro Otomo to remind me.

I have never, ever, ever seen a decent steampunk movie. Ever.

Dictionary.com defines steampunk as "a genre of science fiction set in Victorian times when steam was the main source of machine power." I'd supplement that with the comment that the steam power is typically being used in ways it never was in reality; powering robots, for example, or rod-and-piston computers, or big ol' art-nouveau spaceships. It's just an aesthetic, yes. But it's an awful pretty one. And since the closest I've ever seen a movie come to steampunk was the positively vile League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, it's a pretty tough itch to scratch.

Don't think I'll be able to wait until next year to see this one. Might have accquire it myself. Yarrrr.

Interesting; I'd never heard of SteamPunk. Who invented it, Neil Gaiman with his comic "Mr. Hero"?

Nope, and Mr.Hero wasn't entirely Steampunk. It's a genre that's been around for a long time, but I'm not sure how common it is...

Examples in other anime/manga/comic books include-

Lea Hernandez's Texas SteamPunk saga, which has had 2 of 7 books published. It's got a great setting, a victorian world with just a hint of SciFi, though not many steampowered machines as of yet, but book 3 promisese a giant robot "Iron Clad Petal". Book 1 has a great Machine plot that adds to the SciFi, while book 2 has a murder mystery and some fantasy. Lea's stuff is great, and I can't wait for book 3, in fact, I hope she reads this and draws some of it today :) After Hardy Boys gets done of course ^_^

Sakura Wars- A really popular video game adn anime sereis from Japan about a group of spirit warriors in special mecha who fight invading evil demons. It's chock full of steampowered machines, and even has a wacky inventor in Kohran. The warriors are mostly female [only one guy, but it avoids being a harem anime by giving him only one real love interest in Sakura, the lead gal... the spirit power required for the machines tends to occur mostly in girls], and they'reform all over the world.
The genius of it only really gets out there when they get to the parts where to hide their operations, the girls build a theatre where they enact Takarazuka-esque muscial plays with all female casts, to help keep Tokyo happy, and to hone their spirit powers and teamwork.
There is a manga too, but the Oh!My Goddess guy which has mysteriously not been licensed yet.

Steam Detectives- Kia Asiyama's Steampunk comic. Very retro, with a bizarre amalgamation of Tokyo and London and Gotham City as the setting, complete with a villan who's a great Batman ripoff :) Complete with Steam in the title :)

Can't think of many others off the tip of my head, but I know there's been novels about this stuff since at least the 80's....

Err... I would suspect that the actual term 'steampunk' originated from William Gibson & Bruce Sterling's early '90s novel, "The Difference Engine." Of course, one could argue that authors like Jules Verne and H.G. Wells 'invented' steampunk a long time before that.

ps. I caught Steamboy at the Toronto Film Festival, and it really is quite an excellent film. I do love my steampunk.

The only problem being that The Difference Engine is pretty much the most excrutiatingly awful book I have ever read.

Of course, there's Paul Di Filippo's "The Steampunk Trilogy," which is substantially more interesting, but, you know, it is hard to be boring when you claim that Queen Victoria is actually a mutant sex lizard.

A damn fine steampunk site lives over here:

Ignore the fact that it's GeoCities.

I think steampunk is one of those genres that COULD be good. Someday. Somehow. Maybe.

AWESOME. So it's steampunk meets David Icke, right? I'd always thought his crackpottery would make for great fiction.

If you liked Steamboy, go see Howl's Moving Castle... another flipping sweet steampunk anime.

Howl's Moving Castle is actually a book by Diana Wynne Jones, and the film manages to miss out most of the /point/ of the original story. The moving castle is pretty damned cool, though.

Ah, now I know what they call it - “SteamPunk”. It's a weird name, if you ask me. I don't know if I can actually take it seriously. But I do enjoy it nonetheless. It's like Jules Verne sort of stuff, just written when Jules Verne has passed away. Which reminds me, I really would like to read some of his stuff and see how he wrote it – could be a good exercise. My first encounter with SteamPunk was actually a computer game called “Ultima : Martian Dreams.” It was also pretty weird.
