Did I ever mention I'm ashamed to be from the South?

Braaaaaaahg. I hate that thing so much. As someone who was raised in both the North and the South during different developmental periods, I really hate all of this atrocious finger-pointing I see going on. Bush won, obviously it's because everyone from the South is a monster who wants to secede. Yes, that's exactly it.

Except no.

First off, defining someone solely based on their geographical location is wrong. I mean, it can go both ways...Southerners are all puerile hicks who are bent on the destruction of every race and way of life outside of theirs, and Northerners are all cold, mean, heartless people who cannot interact correctly with real human beings outside of smacking them. Does that make it better?

No.

Secondly, in what way does propagating hate help battle hate? Isn't that whole article hypocritical in nature, as it is so infused with the sort of blatant vitriol and stereotyping that it serves to speak against?

I've lived in the North, and I've lived int he South, and all I have to say is that we all have things to learn from each other. All thigns like this serve to do is separate us, when in reality we should be trying to come together. We shouldn't still be fostering notions that someone is defined by their relative position to the Mason-Dixie line.

Misha, I can sympathize with your point of view. I know that southerner's aren't all uneducated hicks just as much as northerners aren't all godless intellectuals. But the type of person reffered to on that website does exist. They are not limited to a specific geographical region; they are peppered throughout the nation (and according to the recent election comprise just a little over half of the nation). I myself am guilty of broad generalizations regarding people who vote republican (especially with regard to the past couple of presidential elections). I tend to think that they come in three types: the rich, the religous, and the rednecks (sometimes a combination of the three). It's hard for me to believe that someone who votes for a candidate who clearly doesn't have their best interest at heart is really aware of what's going on around them. If someone isn't aware of what's going on around them, it must stand to reason that they are either willfully looking the other way (perhaps because their religous beliefs or monetary goals demand it) or they are just plain ignorant.

As for propogating hate to battle hate. I agree with you that it is a bad policy. Even so, it's better than capitulating to the haters and apologizing for having a differing opinion. Right now we're at the beginning of a backlash from liberals, cynics and intellectuals. A month and a half ago they saw what they viewed as their last hope shattered and have been in a state of shock ever since. They've been bending over and surrendering for six weeks and are just starting to get ahold of themselves. So now there will be a lot of yelling and vitriol. Hopefully it will all level out by 2008 so they can keep a clear head and fight for what they believe. But in the short run a little bit of foul language and finger pointing will, if nothing else, prove cathartic.

Michael: Thank you for your well thought-out response.

While I understand that the page is directed at a specific type of person, the problem is that it narrows and identifies all of those from the South as being that type of person. It excludes the fact that there are people like that in the North as well, I mean, hell, short-sighted people are everywhere. Stupidity knows no race, creed, or nationality. It's equal opportunity. And yet, according to this article, is seem sto be purely the domain of the Southerner.

Although perhaps it's not the page that bothers me so much as it is the constant linking I see accompanied by text like "This thing is so awesome!", or "This is so true, hahaha!". I understand it's cathartic, but as it is wont to happen on the internet, people are taking it too far and getting way too into this "Us vs. Them" mentality that shouldn't exist. What of those of us who consider ourselves a member of both communities? In the end, it's sheer hypocrisy to criticize close-minded behaviour with an argument composed of close-minded stereotypes and points of view.

That link was an interesting read, although I tend to take Michael Moore with a grain of salt.

Anyway, thanks for your response!
