Not Ready for Prime Time.

I guess I can stop whining about losing my old Xeric rejection letter now, because a new one came in the mail. MY COLLECTION IS COMPLETE.

To take a good, long look at failure, check out the newest member of the Rejection Letter Showcase in the Misc. section. It's the only one I bothered to scan in color. It's that special. It's, uh, also the only one that's not... you know... white.

It's times like this that I occasionally consider selling original Sparkneedle pages to finance a print run. Then I remember that no one buys comics anymore, and I go get a handful of baby pickles and play Evil Genius for two hours instead.

PRODUCTIVE.

I really do envy your attitude towards pretty much everything.

I would buy comics. I already do buy as many minicomics as I can. Just ask Leanne Franson.

Kim: Well, yeah, it sucks that I lost. No sense in claiming that it wasn't a blow to my ego. But I wasn't alone in being rejected, I figure. 99% of the people who try for a Xeric are, including a few of my friends.

And I'm too close to it to realize how goddamn WEIRD Sparkneedle must read to people who have never seen it before, so maybe the error was mine in submitting it instead of something less... experimental.

Sad truth? I'll probably try for a Xeric again in a few years.

Wait, hold the PHONE! They offer a free Dave Sim publication! Hot DAMN! Doesn't that count for anything?

I got one of them Xeric rejections, once. Didn't stop me from doing my stuff, but back then, I knew there was only a narrow pipe to getting readers' attention.

It's a shame about not being funded, but mine came when the Web was barely a twinkle in the internet's eye. At the time, Bar and I weren't sure how we were ever going to do our magnum opus without outside help.

The whole point of art is audience. Xerics are great honors, they point out what the best works in our field should be like, and you deserve one.

But your audience is finding *you*. That's an entirely differ stack of cards from when the Xerics were first created.

Rock on.
