I am having a hell of a time deciding what Gene's voice sounds like in my head. Is it raspy? or deep and quiet? low and nasal? Not really worth cooking braincells about, I guess, but the difference in lettering started it.

Gene sounds like Neil Fallon from Clutch (I AM SO LAME), except he speaks much, much slower.
Deep, rumbly, kind of coarse. You think he's either stoned or exhausted the first few times you talk to him, but then you realize that NO ONE could stay THAT stoned for THAT long.
I was kinda thinking of Moe from "Calvin and Hobbes" when I decided to make Gene talk in all lowercase. It was the best example I could think of for communicating The Boy Ain't Right vibes, which is what people get when they talk to him.
His pronounciation/enunciation is fine, but you still know something's wrong. But since Gene doesn't actually have any visible mental impairment markers (Down Syndrome face, for example), he kind of throws people for a loop.
I'm being mean, really. He's not stupid like a rock, I'd say he's smarter than Forrest Gump, definitely smarter than the guy in Slingblade. But he's not normal.
YAY FLOOD OF INFORMATION NOBODY CARES ABOUT!

I got the "boy ain't right" vibe okay though, good job on conveying that. I also win because Chase was the one who thought he was more nasal, where I was going with deep-voiced.
