This has to be happening somewhere.

So I've been losing way too many goddamn hours to Oblivion, lately. And it makes me wonder a little.

I've seen Otherkin, who think they're fictional fantasy creatures. And I've seen Otakukin, who think they're specific anime characters. And I've seen Fictionkin, who insist they have the souls of specific characters from novels.

Does anyone out there think they're a video game character, yet? Because that would just be too fucking perfect.

I don't really mean the three or four monsters of wrongness fighting over who's married to Sephiroth on the astral plane. I'm thinking more in terms of people who think they're their own RPG characters. From games we know.

I wanna meet the guy who thinks he has the soul of a level 39 Tauren druid.

Well, no. No, I don't. But I definitely want to read his Livejournal.

I know some characters who believe they're living people.

Perhaps we could set up a kind of exchange program. The world would be a better place.

Yeah, it's happened. We had a couple nutty players of one of our text-based RPGs who claimed they could cast the spells from our game.

Hence the reason I don't go to many player gatherings anymore.

I once truly believed I was a City of Heroes villain I created...

For about twelve minutes. Does that count?

I don't know if World of Warcraft is more of a "game we know" than Final Fantasy, but REGARDLESS, I hear the phenomenon you speak of usually occurs more with old, pen-and-paper type of games. I have in fact seen a messageboard populated by people who thought they were Drow. Drow who spent time in Elven concentration camps, no less.

That has to count for something, doesn't it?

Have you seen purepwnage.com? They have an episode (6?) on World of Warcraft, but you can broaden it out to any MMO. Jeremy, the main character becomes convinces he can survive in the real world on nothing but the food/drink of his character. Funniest episode hands down.
I've never heard of rl folks believing they have the souls of fictional characters... funnier still would be if anyone thought they had the soul of one of your characters!
