I caught the new strip several minutes before your post, so I had time to write a bunch of stuff up:
I've been meaning to verbally admire your attention to detail and continuity, and today's comic is a perfect example. I saw the splotches in the last panel and thought "Holy crap, did Ben just puke on himself?" and then "No, wait, there's mystery gunk on his face before that" and "Musta been on Bill's clothes" and "Hmm...I wonder" *click click click* sure enough, there's mystery gunk visible on Bill's back a handful of strips ago, when Ben first flipped open the shade.
That's remarkable. And typical of your storytelling so far. When you visualize a scene, you're clearly visualizing ALL of it, far in advance, as if you were blocking a play; and objects in the comic have as much permanence as props on a stage. I wouldn't be surprised to see the box of cereal Ben dropped on the floor in the next comic.
My inner Annie Wilkes entirely approves.

I'm thinking that what Ben just got hit with is a substance that nauseates you - which is delivered through paintballs that the Templar cops lay down.
I'm actually somewhat surprised to see Ben going from a temporary cipher to a character with more depth. The Cooks seem designed for the faceless antagonist/anarchist deathsquad model, but we're seeing one of them as an actual character rather than just as a menacing cipher.

JPCrim, If you recall, it was the cops wielding those paintball guns. (c.f. the strip for 10 November, and note "TPD", I presume for Templar Police Department, on the CO2 tank).
And whatever crowd dispersal agent it was, our boy Benjamin just got a face full of it. Barney's reaction (3 and 4 Nov) seems to indicate that Cook family tactics are psychological, and that whatever they threw was probably minimally harmful (other than the big flaming propane tank (which oddly enough seems to have a baloon-filling nozzle on it))
