Templar: Late, as usual.

I need to stop pretending I know when I'll finish this stuff.

That said, everyone here should go thank Jane Irwin for being alive. She called me up last night and gave me a couple of emails to try with Bowker, the ISBN people. One bounced back, but the other's clearly gone through, meaning at least one human being has read about how I can't get ten ISBNs out of these people after three (now four) emails and two phone calls. But there's a $500.00 charge on my credit card, so it's fair to say they owe me something.

But I digress. I'll save it for the pre-order blog.

Someone asked in the previous blog comments whether or not I do cons. I do, actually. Or rather, I'd like to. When I finally get this book printed, this summer will be my first attempt at "doing" the Midwestern con circuit. Most are anime cons, because most cons these days are anime cons. But I've been assured by my buddy Dirk that the crowds there might be receptive to Templar, so I'm gonna give it a shot. I'm not making plans, reserving tables, or scheduling trips until the book's put to bed, and 100% in the printer's hands, though.

More comics later.

Toronto! Go to Toronto. I might go to Toronto. It's in June and cool people like Raina Telgemeier and Azad Injejikian are signed up for it.

Oh, God. I would love to go to France and Britain for cons, but I won't be able to afford much in the way of international airfare for the foreseeable future. Midwestern cons, on the other hand... if I put in for gas money, Dirk could drive. Thirty to fifty bucks round trip, I can do. Four hundred, not so much.

Toronto, though... well, not too crazy. that's what, five hundred miles from Chicago?

Madison! Come to Madison. Because we don't have a con but I'm too lazy to go anywhere else. You could start your own and then I could build a religion around you.

Actually, Madison is home to one of my favorite cons. WisCon, which touts itself as "The World's Leading Feminist Science Fiction Convention." It's a small con, and primarily a literary con rather than a comic, gaming, or anime con, and as such, I'm not sure if getting a table would be profitable for you. Still, it's a great place to meet well-known writers and artists and actually sit down and have a beer with them... you know, rather than oggling them from the end of the autograph line.

Plus, it's the home of the James Tiptree, Jr. Award for gender bending fiction (and their annual auction and bake sale). Who can say no to that? Given the literary tastes of the people who attend, I'd say Templar would be welcomed with open arms.

I already knew Jane Irwin was cool, cuz she wrote and drew Vogelein (and she's from Michigan).

I think you should totally do some small press comicons, and you could always start with SNAP! in Detroit (it's not until the fall, so you've plenty of time). Info about it is at greenbrain.biz. And no, I don't work for Green Brain Comics. :)

actually there is a con in eau claire, wi in late april (20-23). nobrand con. (www.nobrandcon.com) it's primarily an anime con and the like, but it's a pretty decent size. and it's fun. i'm going back (as a final "farewell") since i haven't gone for 3 years.

i don't know if that would appeal to you, but technically if all else fails i'm sure my friends wouldn't mind allowing you to crash in our hotel room. but we're only being there sat/sun.

but i don't know if you'd have your book by then...and i think the dealer's room might be full... but maybe next year!
