Templar: Surprise!

No, this isn't what they're kicking him out for. I'd say it's pretty clear they never even guessed. Which is... Pretty extraordinary, really.

I didn't blog about the update before this one, and sorry about that; I've been pretty busy. Take a look at this round's vote sketches, you'll see what I've been up to. Part of it, anyway.

No details. Sorry. Not until I think I have something worth telling you guys. I hope I will.

And because people have been asking, I did spray a few of the sketch commissions with fixative before sending them out, but I stopped; it made the books smell funny. I don't think your commissions will be in much danger of smearing, but if you're concerned, a little hairspray will keep everything in place. Hairspray and fixative are basically the same thing anyway.

I also need to update my con schedule; obviously, I wasn't at SPX this weekend. I will, however, be at Sugoi Con, Youmacon, and the New York Anime Festival this year. Exciting.

Back to work...

To be honest, I feel like a bit of an imbecile, because I don't follow this storyline at all. I must be riding the short bus.

If I may, this is what I'm getting out of it so far. Reclamation uses old, outdated laws to force people out of their homes. Then they rebuild those homes to be suitable to house large low-income families comfortably, complete with hydroponics and other amenities to help them free themselves from wage slavery, to encourage "fair play". Either this fellow is being kicked out of his home, or he's being kicked out of his soviet (I'm not sure which). Either way, they're making a complete nitpicky inventory of his possessions. He's claiming that John Barnabus, the reclamation leader, has over extended himself this time by trying to use this trick against the prostitution hotbed that is Oarlock. He's saying that Madam Dove taught the prostitutes to be clever and tough, to stick up for themselves and each other, and that's still the case for the Oarlock whores. He's claiming that they'll be hiring lawyers to poke holes all through the quasi-legal methods Reclamation uses and then the entire movement will be in jeopardy. None of the dialogue is non-sequitor, in this case. It does end up hanging together. I still don't get how the "works" comment fits in.

It took me a couple of times to get the 'works' or think I got the 'works' thing. I'm guessing heroine. Needles, spoon, shoelace tourniquet...so I'm banking drugs.

I was having a hard time following this scene till now, but now that I know who's telling the story and who's doing the cataloguing, it's a lot clearer.

As I understand, Reclamation doesn't actively kick anyone out; they take over buildings that nobody's using, and then try to claim the building legally under squatter's rights. That's the reference to the 1920's laws. This time, Soviet 17 (from the title page) is trying to take over an abandoned building in the Oarlock, an area run by people who are notorious for not letting anything go without a fight. This guy, an Elliot I presume by the title, is telling them they're gonna fix up this building real nice, and then the prostitutes are going to kick them out and legally take back the building they rightfully own. That's the point of the Dove story.

And this guy is being kicked out of the soviet for some reason we're not privy to yet, and they're counting up everything he came in with so he doesn't leave the community with more than he brought to it. Right down to a partially used tube of toothpaste. Pure, unadulterated communism. I love it.

From what Spike said, he's not getting kicked out for using heroin - but that is what those possessions total up to.

As for the "works" I think that's an answer to (Elliot?)'s semi-rhetorical question about John B's arm. The soviet worker says "works," probably a short form for "good works," i.e. reclamation.

I'm thinking it was probably an infection from shooting up.

Naw, I'm betting "works" is their soviet slang for "drug paraphanelia." The dude with the tattoo on his forhead is going "Check it out! He has "works" on him!" and the one with the pamphlet in his hand is surprised.

I'm wondering what the little sound effects are. I'm waiting for a door to open and a reagan-like character to barge in.

Yeah. Works usually = gear = heroin paraphernalia.

I'm wondering too -- about the preorders -- the intermission I think I have a handle on. I've been watching my mail intently for the past couple of weeks. Don't want my carrier bending something that should be left unbent -- as she has been wont to do! So have they all been shipped off? I'm prepared to set up a chair by my mailbox if so.

I got my book late last week and I love it - it printed up beautifully, and it was a pleasure to hold and read - (and ben was so adorable) - thanks, spike!
(when is chapter two going to be in print? soon, please?)

Works = paraphenalia for sure.

I have no idea if that's spelt right.

Also, maybe it's just me, but in the second panel, the expression of the dude and the way his eyes are drawn really reminds me of the drawing style of the guy who does Comedity.

I wonder if they're kicking him out for misusing his soviet's funds/resources. Because almost any kind of drug habit is a really expensive hobby for someone who lives with a group purse.

"Works" is indeed traditional junky lingo that signifies the heroin-preparing and -injecting apparatus, which like at bare minimum is a cooking spoon, syringe, spike (needle), plunger and tourniquet.
