And he's not the last, either. Awful, isn't it?
Okay, not much to say again this update, since I have to get ready to take off this afternoon and set up my booth at Wizard World Chicago. According to a list I was sent last week, my (half) table in Artist's Alley is 3808 B.
There will be people I know at the con, but this'll be the first one where I'm not flanked by at least one or two friends; My usual con partners opted for an anime con being held the same weekend this year instead. So, I expect to be quietly lonely and terrified for the majority of the show. Please come see me, okay? I'm easy to find. I'm small and brown and I have a big banner and I'll probably be drawing some commissions.
This update's votes sketches are also nothing to get excited about. So stop it. Right now.
Scipio wants to ignore a Person In Distress? Hmm.
Why is Gene's eye yellow in the first panel? I vaguely recall you once mentioning a random-color-autofill plugin.
D'OH. Fixed. Thanks for catchin' that, it totally slipped by me...
So, they are just gonna leave a guy who fell in a cross walk, in the middle of the street, and not offer assistance, to get him out of traffic's way?
What a bunch of dicks.
More like "what a bunch of people who live in a city where crazy and/or inebriated people often have spasms in the middle of intersections and lash out violently at anyone who attempts to help".
I happen to live in one of these cities, too. You learn to stand back for a little bit, because about 90% of the time these people get up on their own and leave.
As Spike makes mention in her post of introducing yet another character, I suspect they aren't actually gonna walk off and leave the guy in the crosswalk.
Scip's a big worrywart, but decent enough to help the guy if he needs it.
Heck, if I can sell ten books at a con then I'm sure you can do far better. Just make sure you bring enough that you won't run out!
Just wanted to say Wagner's totally right- you never "help" in this kind of situation unless a person is asking for it and seems at least a little bit lucid.
My confidence in Scip's judgment has been dropping progressively for a few pages now. Gene, on the other hand, seems better and better put together by the panel - if he goes to help, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt.
(I realize I'm skating pretty close to the "beating a dead horse" hole in the ice with this third post on Gene and Scip, so I'll just say that people who condescend to manifestly better-adjusted and more talented folks on the basis of language use and perceived emotional maturity really, really irk me - Scip is an underemployed bodyguard who sees things the way he wants to see them and is unthinkingly rude and condescending because he thinks he's in some way superior to other people and Gene is a musical prodigy who sees things the way they actually are and happens to be very sweet - based on the fact alone that he beats people up for a living and Gene creates beauty, Scip is the asshole)
That said, people who sleep in the street are addled at the least and batshit insane at the worst. They are not often harbingers of a rockin' good time chock full of emotional connection and insight, and are more commonly armed and angry. Avoid.
At first I didn't like Gene too much. The way he doesn't really pay any attention to the actions of his own daughter, the fact that hes a slightly functional mentally challenged musician, things like that kind of set my mind against him. But now I'm starting to change that opinion. He's like a lovable little kid who got hit in the head a few too many times.
I know it's late but I;m gonna have to disagree with the general anti-Scip sentiment here... he's not being condescending, he's stating things as they actually are. No matter how sweet and friendly and talented Gene is, he still has a mental imbalance and doesn't percieve things in the same way most people do. Scip's not an asshole for pointing this out, and neither was Reagan, back in the first chapter. Gene is actually mentally handicapped and does need people to look out for him, plain and simple.
It isn't that Gene ISN'T childlike, it's that Scip IS an asshole. Gene IS a nice person. Scip IS condescending and elitist. Neither have anything to do with who's more functional, and as far as that goes, I haven't seen any evidence that Gene's incapable of dealing with the real world, either. He's got a support system, he's employed, he's got a wife and kid, and people like him okay. Scip's got a string of psychotic girlfriends and by his own admission he's irresponsible and incompetent at his job.
