Most of this page was inked at my table at Wizard World Chicago ( number 3808 B in Artist's Alley, drop on by!), and I'm pleased to report that, as of 2:00 PM Friday afternoon, the table is paid for. This con business? Officially and fiscally worth my time. Preview Night was desperately slow, but things improved a lot when they began letting people other than exhibitors in. Guess I should have figured that out for myself. Duh.
I'm sitting next to Short Pants Press' Sarah, who was kind enough to mention me on Chicagoist during a recent interview. Maybe y'saw her on CNN. too? She's hot shit, I will have you know, especially since she's responsible for the Ignatz-nominated Ouija Interviews, which I can personally recommend as freaking awesome.
Anyway, more con tomorrow, and hopefully fresh vote sketches, too. No time today, I'm afraid.
Um... broken link?
And I'm far too lazy to type in the url to Templar by hand.
Anyone else think that dude looks a bit like Barnabas John? I'm sure it's not, after all Spike said he was a new character, but still...
How is someone this milquetoast and indescisive a bodyguard? Jeez, Scip...
Oh Scip.
Hah, and I was suspecting it might be Bill, drugged up on degreaser like Ben. Hair's different, though. Couldn't be Barnabas, either, he has that prosthetic. Maybe someone else from that assembly?
Ahhahaha. I could just imagine him being this indecicive with Curio getting really upset and whining and yelling, and Moze saying that it was fine.
Given that others have said what I was thinking re:
- good on Ben for stepping up
- Scip's damned indecisive for a bodyguard
- That ain't Barnabas
I'd just like to say I'm amused that Ben's still got that mark on his face where Reagan was ripping off bits of paint. That's attention to detail, that is.
Oh my god oh my god. I was re-reading the strip just now, and when I got to "That happens!" in the last panel all I could think of was Philippe from Achewood.
...
...if my ride doesn't call in the next five minutes, I might be back with something.
On the one hand, Scip does seem pretty indecisive for his job. On the other hand, he was complaining earlier about Sunny not telling him what was expected. He said that that was the only time he'd evey been fired. I bet with more explicit instructions, he'd be a lot less dithery and a lot more with the calm effectiveness. He seems to be the sort who likes to be told what is expected of him. Once given that, he might be terrifyingly competant. Or he could be a shmuck. My vote goes for the former.
Hi Spike,
I stopped by your table on Friday and Saturday (with my husband, Randolph and friends, Jesse and Jo).
I enjoyed talking with you and seeing the page in progress. Also, I'm reading The Great Outdoors, and I have to admit to enjoying it more as a graphic novel. The pacing works really well and it's a handsome book.
Looking forward to the next chapter in print.
Thanks again.
Carissa
Actually, I could see "terrifyingly competent if told what to do by an authority figure" on the part of Scipio.
That said, and speaking only for myself, I value creativity, self-confidence and independent thought over kinesthetic skill. And a meek demeanor makes bad behavior worse, not better. For Christ's sake, be wrong with authority.

"Scipio, remove that person."
"Yes, sir."
"AHhhhhhhHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
"The reason.... you just... dislocated your... own shoulder... is because... you chose... to resist..."
*THUMP*
"...to resist in the face of an overwhelming force. The reed that bends in the typhoon's wind survives, while the mighty oak is uprooted. Think about that nex-"
"Scipio, what have I told you about talking while you work?"
"Yes, sir. Sorry, sir."
Holy shit, Wagner.
Seriously.
And Jala, I was hoping someone would make that connection! Thank you! Scip is the polar opposite of a leader. Ben isn't a natural leader either, but he's been sorta forced into action, here. If he keeps hanging out with Scip, that's gonna keep happening...
From one side, Scip does seem pretty indecisive for his job. But from the other, he was complaining earlier about Sunny not telling him what was expected.
