And now, bullet points.
- I went to OhayoCon a couple of weekends ago and had a fantastic time. OMG HAI to everyone who dropped by or came to my panel. If that con taught me anything, though, it's that I'm not cut out for 12-hour stretches behind a table. Those of you who caught me sleeping there probably, uh, already knew that.
- I got a bunch of gifts in the mail from a friend of mine, which included A book about weird-looking chickens, and toothy teddy socks. And y'know, it was all better personalized and more me than like 90% of the gifts I've gotten in my whole life, not counting my wishlist stuff. That's kinda nice. Well, REALLY nice.
- This is gonna sound weird, but does anybody wanna send me a copy of December's Diamond Previews? I'd really appreciate it, and I'll pay shipping.
There, I think that about covers things.
More later!
Por ben, caught between a rock and a soft place -laughs-
My best friend has that chicken book. It's my favorite thing of all time.
God. I want everyone to have that chicken book.
Even the idea of 12-hour stretches of con-ness makes me tired and cranky. UGH.
Question regarding Jakes: Is it just the ladies that are bald?
When is the book shipping to stores? I already have my copy, but I'd like to see it on Diamond's shipping list. That'd be cool.
Scipio's expression in the first panel really tells the story of a man who's mortally afraid of escalating the situation to a new level of awkwardness.
ha! Who called it? Who called it? That's right. I finally predicted something accurately for templar. Dang. Next comic, Raegan's gonna whip out th' cock o' science!
I could send you the december issue of Previews, but I'm in France so the shipping would be expensive. Also it would have to wait until I'm back from my trip.
Email me if nobody else offers to ship it.
That's brill Spike, no joke.
Anybody thinking what she's saying is crazy, welcome to my world, or more specifically, welcome to my *school*.
University students learn about how non-Europeans changed their environment in often sustainable ways, okay, not the Easter Islanders, but some did.
Professors mean: with an attitude of stewardship and learning, humans can be creative and economic without irrevocably damaging the ecosystems that support them.
Students learn: Non-white people are a natural, non-disruptive part of natural ecosystems. White people aren't capable of interacting with nature and we shouldn't alter it in any way, especially if we think we're trying to help. (For More of this bullshit, read "Deep Ecology" by DeVall and Sessions
that 'fairest fowl' book is full of win.
on a slightly unrelated not, have you heard of sarina brewer? i think you would appreciate her work.

If I had to describe Reagan and Scipio by comparing them to animals (and I do), I'd say Scipio is like...a big fat chicken...and Reagan is a fox. A nice...lithe...fox.
I called Islander first, Nate! Although I was kind of covering all the bases, so you deserve more credit.
I think the shaved head thing is more likely part of a coming-of-age ritual. One of the bald kiddies had a frank of beans, and the bearded guy was bald too - but that might not be by choice. I guess Gene's just an exception?
I get the feeling that he's like a lot of nominally Christian kids - enough has rubbed off from their parents to give them the basic value system, but they're not really vehement believers. That's how it worked for me, anyways.
I can get that for you- either e-mail me, or better yet drop me a message at Myspace- I'm on your friendslist. I just need to know if you need the catalogue, or what exactly (my hunny works at a comic book store) we should send.

Gene's mom is really raking her fingers through his hair, too - is she jealous that he gets to have hair, or is she wishing he would let her shave it off like it's supposed to be?
sarah: So very, very true.
spike: I'd have your babies if we weren't both spoken for and also if it were medically possible.
I wouldn't say Scipio is a big fat chicken.. though I would say he is definitely the bastard lovechild of C-3PO and Shaq.
Oh no! Put that knife down! And is that young woman taking off her dress?
Maybe she's gonna nurse one of the kids in a perfectly natural way?
If somebody - even my mother - told me to "let my pretty head out" I'm pretty sure I would start running in the opposite direction.
It looks as though that girl is wearing something under her dress. I think I see something under her armpit. However, given how strategically that speech bubble is covering the nipple area, it's hard to say.
And, omigod, not Gene's hair!!
This is usually the point in my first dates - knife comes out, brainwashed girl removes her top - that things get Weird.
"mommy's coming home?"
poor zora.
The good thing about Zora having her hair cut is that when it grows back, it'll be in all these adorable little curls. On Gene? It takes ages for a guy's hair to get to look good long.
Oh geeze. Love this comic.
1.) Step away from the hair, momma.
2.) Holy COW do Gene and his mam look alike.
3.) Poor Zora. :(
4.) The thus far silent and nameless girl has a look of peace and, dare I say it, sanity around her. However, I could eat those words..
~S~
Start eating ~S~...
Hey, now...nothing insane about what she's doing. Not with her probable upbringing. Not the most (our) culturally acceptable, breastfeeding in front of strangers, and maybe not the most -bright- thing to do, breastfeeding at that age...but I've known crazy, and that ain't it. It's kinda nice. And yeah, she has a peaceful look...almost beatific.
On the other hand...Scips look...and Reagan's smirk...*falls down giggling*
Called it.
Me thinks that lady is eyeing Scip for breeding.
"hey big boy, i've got enough awkward religious sect milk for everyone..."
She totally is. I'm guessing a Good Jake Girl will marry a fellow Jake, but then also have kids with other men of different "families". And I bet those other men don't have to be Jakes, and probably don't have to play a part in being fathers, either. So a Good Jake Girl gets to go after a man with hair occasionally!
Oh god I want an icon of Scip's O_O face.
Reagan's face in that panel is also priceless.
Oh god, her expression is CRIMINAL. Ben's is awesome too.
I guess "lurching" refers to breeding outside of Jake... Eugenics on a personal level is always pretty creepy.
Those kids are, what... 3? 4? More?
I've recently learned there is a secret society of mothers who breastfeed their kids _well_ after what is considered the cultural norm. On pumped milk if not the actual nipple. Medically speaking, it's probably perfectly healthy, but it does throw up all kinds of red flags for other people. As Scip is clearly demonstrating.
I seem to recall, as well, that if a woman breastfeeds it delays ovulation, doesn't it? So if she has that many children and she's breast feeding they must be pretty old.
Anyway, I'm dying to know she is. Gene's sister? Apollo's second wife?
^^ Let's hope she's not both of those...
I keep getting distracted when I try and read this update. It looks like Scip shares this problem.
Look at Scipio.
That's what it looks like to have all your paradigms shifting without the clutch.
i suppose she could also be looking at ben... or reagan? how do jakes feel about the lgbt spectrum?
Dangit, I'm going to need some A1 to get these words down. And maybe a side of fries.
~S~
HA scipo.
oh man, how i will toss and turn awaiting the next installment. oddly enough, i think i'm more concerned for gene's hair than anything else.
I hate to admit, but me and Scip just had the same reaction.
Regan's probably got a whole backlog in her brain of Scip's "scare the square" moments.
The rule about when to stop breastfeeding I've always heard is:
"If they're old enough to ask for it, they're too old!"
She's scary. I'm hiding.
If there are a lot of kids back to back breast feeding isn't to odd up to age 5-6. This is of course assuming their weened and its just the equivalent of a snack of mommy doesn't love the baby more then you kind of thing. Kids seem way to active to have been only living on mother's milk I'd think....
Waitwaitwait. Their religion demands that they actively work towards the destruction of civilization? Hardcore.
Uh-oh. Careful Spike, this is getting -very- appealing, right about now. Unfortunately, I know what I look like bald...but that's about the only thing that's stopping me from going all-out Jake.
Though her interest in Jakeskin is obviously some sort of perverse amusement, Regan could very well end up nekkid with her head shaved if she comes back to see the "others." You have to be careful showing too much interest in certain religions.
I know too well. My extended family are Mormons. You show a tiny bit of polite curiosity, and before you know it missionaries are at your door 24/7.
"No thank you, Grandma. I respect your beliefs, but I don't want to be a breeding factory so all the little angel babies can come down from heaven." :)

Cool, Gene's "Catalyze decomposition" thing from the Mob Goes Wild is finally explained.
so...who's jake?
Hey Spike-
I'm holding the December Diamond Previews for you- let me know where to send it, and don't worry about shipping- it's the least i can do to thank you.
*chuckles* Uh-oh, Ben...your shield just left.
So far, I like Feather. I think she and Reagan are either going to get along famously or end up killing each other in an epic battle of DOOM...but I like her. I like her choices for names...yet another neat Jakeskin tradition, or just her own personal slant on it, I wonder?
she mentioned spoken history living on after the rest of civilization crumbles. do you think they memorize books and plays ala fahrenheit 451?
Dang, if I had my drothers I'd totally change my first & middle name to "Marcel Duchamp." Or possibly "Francis Bacon" - and not for the guy who wrote 'The New Atlantis.'
I'm loving the Jakes, and moreso Reagan's perverse glee at being in their presence. It's like she's encountered something so unmistakably Other that she's just barely able to hold her atoms together due to the freak factor.
@dotcom
speaking of mormons, i'm told that the best way to get rid of them permanently is to invite them in to tell you more about their holy book -- and then jack off to whatever they say.
... at least they left my friend alone after that.
Ben's gonna use this for an article, innit he?
Grafiti hooded figures, again. They've shown up a couple places. I feel like Templar should have burst long ago from all the crazy culture that Spike's been doling out in little packets for us to enjoy and argue over. There's obviously tons and tons more we haven't even seen yet. Spike, how far in advance do you plan your plot? Because it's a nice change from people who sort of make it up as they go along.
So, the Jakes are one of those end of the world religions/cults. "When society collapses we will be ready to pick up the pieces." and all that then.
Well I sure hope the world doesn't end. If the Jakes survive I have very little hope for the future of humankind.
Those of you looking for a game that must surely be something like the one Eugene is playing, check out Synaesthete:

Spike! Make another damned weblog post, already!
:D
Ben looks so cute combing and mussing his hair. "Uh oh. Been spotted!"
So I re-read Templar the other night before bed.
...THAT was a dumb idea.
My dreams are usually pretty retarded, but having to deal with Ben, Zora and Scip and for some reason, Curio... well, they were certainly extremely interesting dreams.
Every one remembers that our life is expensive, however different people require cash for different issues and not every one gets enough money. Thence to receive quick credit loans and just secured loan should be a right solution.
