Why would he necessarily be sober? I'm guessing the closest that he gets is sober-ish. Which would still be a sight to behold I'm sure.

Not to mention, children tend to be like their parents in intellect and interest in school. I'm not saying Pippy is dumb, but she's obviosly not the type who succeeds in school. I bet he moved all that crap out of the house and said he was bringing it to his office. There wouldn't be hearts on the box if he'd been on bad terms with his daughter(s).
I wonder if it's like where a guy loses his job but then doesn't tell his family and keeps "going to work" every day but actually drinks or gambles. Maybe Bash is an ex-doctor. >.>
my bet is that he's recently divorced, with kids' writing on those boxes and a cheap-ass apartment, or going with Kat's guess, hiding the loss of a job from his family. hopefully, it's not his normal lifestyle choice to drink to the point of passing out mid-street.
