That's so great. I love how he mentions the Shrike. Have you read Hyperion by, I think, Dan Simmons?

I'm not sure what a science fiction novel has to do with that story seeing as a shrike is a species of bird known for impaling small animals and insects on thorny bushes.

Woyzeck is an incredibly depressing book. I love this clip. Matt Rosemeier and Tom Waits rock, and this is so beautiful in a despairing little way.

Kitty: The Hyperion cantos involve a supernatural time-travelling creature called the Shrike that does exactly that for a living. The mistake is understandable. (Via WP.)

I really hope that all of this nonsense manages to percolate down to Ben so he quits with the passive-aggressive medication nonsense. Although if my last guess about the issue here (borderline) was correct, borderline-dependents do do that pretty often - they're their parents' property, so harming themselves punishes their parents. This isn't an active train of thought, but it's kind of what runs beneath the surface of the behavior, and it's why it generalizes (after they leave or the parent dies) into behavior towards life in general. Some crazy guy yells at you when you shoot his chickenhawkin' routine down? Throw out your meds and freak out for a while! That'll show him!

In the meanwhile, the similarly freaky relationship between Gene and his all-too-present family is similarly great. Woo!

This was the saddest thing TOm Waits ever did.
